History of the book:
Antiphonal on strong paper printed by order of the illustrious and reverend Father in God, Monseigneur Jean-Baptiste-Joseph de Lubersac, bishop of Chartres, and of the consent of the chapter. Paris, Cl. Simon, 1784.
In-folio bound in full contemporary calfskin, spine and binding covers.
In its conception and its organization this gradual is inspired by the Parisian liturgical books. Monseigneur de Lubersac was bishop of Tréguier in 1775, and also chaplain of Madame Sophie, aunt of the King. Transferred to the diocese of Chartres in 1780, it was he who brought Sieyès from Tréguier, whom he appointed canon, chancellor and grand vicar. He was a deputy of the clergy of the bailliage of Chartres at the Estates-General (1789) and was one of the promoters of the fusion of the three orders and the abolition of privileges. Opposed to the religious decrees of the Constituent Assembly, he refused to take the oath to the Civil Constitution of the Clergy (1790). During the French Revolution, he stayed in England and in Germany.
